Two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso has hinted at a comeback to the sport next season, as the Spaniard is unlikely to renew his WEC contract at Toyota for the 2019/20 season.

Since retiring from F1, Alonso has been more active than ever. He won the 24 Hours of Daytona while also testing for McLaren's F1 team in Bahrain and in a Dakar-challenger. He'll compete at the Indy500 in May and in the 24 Hours of Le Mans a month later.

"I feel that I need to recharge the batteries a little bit," Alonso said last November. "But in 2020 it could be a full season in IndyCar, a full season in F1, a full season in a different series."

Zak Brown recently rejected the idea of Alonso doing a full season in IndyCar even though McLaren are considering entering the series full-time as early as next year, despite running in the Indy500.

Alonso is clearly leaving his options open, which could be because of McLaren's uptick in performance in F1 this season. However, the new WEC season gets underway in just under five months, meaning Alonso will have to make a decision in the near future.

"We expect to announce our drivers for next season relatively soon," a Toyota spokesperson told Motorsport.com.
