Red Bull didn't have the pace to contest

Max Verstappen believes the Red Bull didn’t have the pace to compete with the top three as a strategy error from Ferrari helped him beat out Charles Leclerc to fourth place.

Despite finishing fourth and having a competitive dual with Sebastian Vettel the Honda-powered Red Bull never made any proper inroads into the podium positions and Verstappen’s teammate Pierre Gasly had a race of his own. The Frenchman was too quick for the midfield but wasn’t able to compete with the top five.

Despite briefly overtaking Vettel, Verstappen felt the team didn’t have the pace to compete at the top and following the race, he said: “I think there was not much in it, I was pushing very hard to try and stay with them.

“As a team, we did a good job today to undercut a Ferrari and stay ahead as well.

“We maximised the result, to be honest, every weekend is a bit of a guess what you are doing and how competitive you are as well.

“I had a good battle with Seb but even after that we just didn’t have the pace really to fight.

“You just need to make sure that you run your own race."
