Pierre Gasly says he is ready to step up his performance level after a difficult start to his Red Bull career.

The Frenchman has been left behind by his teammate Max Verstappen so far this season. Instead of fighting for podium finishes, Gasly has found himself down in the midfield amongst teams Red Bull will not consider its rivals.

Ahead of F1's 1000th race at the Chinese Grand Prix, Gasly conceded that he had not been performing at the level expected of him but was sure he would show improvement sooner rather than later.

"I will work with the team and try to improve what I can on my side because for sure there are areas where I can do better," he told Sky Sports F1.

"And I will try to work with them to see what we can do with the set-up, to make me feel more confident to push and being able to attack, because at the moment it's quite difficult."

Gasly could be heard telling the team after qualifying in Bahrain that his car was tricky to drive, particularly under acceleration. Gasly highlighted the issue as a key factor in his underwhelming season so far but added he expected the team would find a fix for the issue.

"The feeling you have at the front when you turn the wheel, it doesn't respond as you want.

"And especially the traction, all the time on power I get a lot of wheelspin and not really a strong support from the rear.

There are some things for sure where I need to adapt, because last year I had a different car and for sure there are things I need to change.

"I will work on it and hopefully with the team we will find direction to make it feel a bit more suitable for my driving."
