Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost has praised new driver Alexander Albon’s technical feedback and progress in Formula after the driver scored his first points in the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Albon finished third in last season’s Formula 2 competition, behind fellow rookies Lando Norris and George Russell earning him a seat at Toro Rosso. The Thai driver has since scored points in Bahrain after a ninth-place finish following a P14 in Melbourne.

Having won four races in F2 last season Franz Tost admitted Albon’s start to live in the pinnacle of motorsport has taken the team by surprise.

“Alex is coming from Formula 2 - he won four races last year, showed a really good performance and from the first test onwards I was really happy to have him in the team,” Tost said in an interview on Crash.net.

“He surprised all of us by a fantastic performance and also by really good technical feedback.

“He has also a good overview of how to treat the tyres.

“I must say that Toro Rosso has a very, very strong driver line-up this year and I’m convinced that both of them will have a lot of success in the future.”
