Christian Horner takes cheeky dig at Renault after Bahrain Grand Prix

Christian Horner took a dig at the Renault engine after their double retirement cost Red Bull a likely podium in the closing stages of the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Red Bull, who ditched the Renault engine after the conclusion of the 2018 season, has scored 25 more points than their French rivals. Max Verstappen was on for a likely podium as Charles Leclerc's power was fading, but the two Renault cars retired forcing a safety car to come out.

In the press conference after the race, Horner couldn't help himself from taking a dig at Renault.

"Renault blowing up, unfortunately, didn't help us see the podium," Horner said while laughing. "It's ironic, isn't it? Whether they're in the car or out of the car!"

Red Bull is still the third best team on the grid, but they aren't as close to Ferrari and Mercedes as they would have liked. Pierre Gasly struggled in both races so far, but Horner insists the team must find more pace.

"I think we need to find more performance. Ferrari were very strong here this weekend. Mercedes have got lucky with a 1-2 [finish]. Ferrari were dominant here this weekend. So trying to understand where we are, the strengths and weaknesses to Ferrari here are quite important," he added in an interview on ESPN.

"You can see, once you get in the window, particularly with these tyres, [Ferrari] looked like a different team to two different weeks ago and vice versa with Mercedes so it's just understanding what the magic is ..."
