Sam bird loses Formula E victory after five-second penalty

Sam Bird has lost his Hong Kong Formula E victory after the stewards deemed he was at fault for the collision with the leader at the time, Andre Lotterer. Edoardo Mortara has inherited the win, with Lucas di Grassi moving up to second and Robert Frijns taking third. Mortara becomes the fifth different winner this season after five rounds. 

Stoffel Vandoorne started on pole but was forced into a retirement 15 minutes from the chequered flag. Felipe Massa finished inside the top 10 as two other former Formula 1 drivers collided together to bring out the red flag.

Mortara becomes the sixth different winner this season after six rounds. 

Vandoorne, the former McLaren driver lost his lead in the opening corner. Bird moved up five places, contributing to the total of 42 overtakes in the first lap.

After the red flag, caused by Nasr and Wehrlein's crash, Vandoorne slipped down to 4th and then 16th before retiring.

In typical Formula E style, the excitement was retained until the end of the race. With 15 minutes left, Bird was following Lotterer and attempted many overtakes.

The Brit was hampered by two safety car periods in the final 15 minutes. After the second restart, Bird was trying to force his way past on the narrow street circuit. On his final attempt, he caught the back wheel of Lotterer and gave him a puncture. 

Bird took the victory on track, but was later handed a five-second penalty for the puncture incident.
