Coulthard suggests Norris a change of approach against Verstappen

Jordan Coulthard Lando Norris to become best driver without a title

Following the US Grand Prix, Max Verstappen could have a smile on his face. Both during the Sprint and the race, he finished ahead of Lando Norris, and now leads in the drivers' standings by 57 points ahead of his British rival. Former team owner Eddie Jordan does see a worrying trend for the British driver, after once again he lost the battle to the Dutchman.

Verstappen could outsmart Lando Norris on two occasions. The Dutchman divebombed the McLaren driver into Turn 1 after the start at COTA, and then he defended well, and he only let Norris past once he was already off the track. Therefore, the Briton was given a five-second penalty.

Eddie Jordan believes Lando Norris is possibly to kind to compete against Verstappen. "The fact is that Lando Norris will go down in the history books as being one of the most incredibly fastest drivers, possibly not to have won a world championship. And the reason being, he should have been out of sight on several of the races this year, where, there is not a chance Max had the car that he had," the Irishman shared in his podcast together with David Coulthard, Formula for Success.

"You're throwing out there that he might not have all the ingredients to win a world championship going toe-to-toe with the likes of a Max," Coulthard responded to his co-host.

Coulthard suggest Norris to close the door

The former McLaren and Red Bull driver could only praise Verstappen's defending, comparing him to all-time greats Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna. Coulthard also has a suggestion for Norris, where he needs to build a reputation so people will not be willing to attack him on the inside.

"He's still maturing into this complete Grand Prix driver. He's got all the speeds. We love how open he is, everything is there. I think that he's still maturing into that person. And I believe in Lando, but at a certain point, he's got to go, ‘Max, you think I'm going to leave the door open, and you can send the car? Well, actually, the doors closed. And if we crash, we crash’."

He added: "I think Lando is just that one step away from fully understanding how to race his competitors." Norris has five Grands Prix weekends left to win the title from a 57-point deficit against Verstappen. The first step to make will be in Mexico City this weekend.
