McLaren want to give Formula 1 teams the chance to take their vehicles to the next level as McLaren reveal their plan for grand prix racing in 2050 which includes an onboard AI co-pilot.

Despite being 31 years away the 2050 plan includes cars which will be electric, that can reach 500 km/h, an AI co-pilot as well as incorporating esports into racing strategy and an AI co-pilot.

Speaking to the official McLaren website, Rodi Basso, the Motorsport Director at McLaren Applied Technologies revealed part of the plan was to give technology the chance to change the outcome of the race.

"Give teams the opportunity to really push the boundaries of active aero as part of their natural car development, and suddenly you have the adoption of a technology that has the possibility to dynamically alter the outcome of a race in an authentic way as drivers battle it out," said Basso.

The onboard AI co-pilot is one of the standout features for the proposed idea and Head of Modelling and Design Science, Karl Surmacz hinted at a shift from "human ingenuity" to AIs

“In the future, we could get to the point where human ingenuity is replaced with an AI algorithm.

"Machine learning would see human preferences and decisions, as well as our domain expertise and instinct, captured.

“Take enough examples of our creative processes and outcomes, and this could be codified into an algorithm which would enable AI to make creative decisions consistent with those of a human counterpart.” Added Surmacz.
