How Alonso's Formula 1 retirement date could be pushed back even further!
Time after time, Fernando Alonso seems to simply sign contracts. When the rest of the world thought we might be seeing the last of Alonso in F1, the Spaniard simply plodded onwards. The now 43-year-old signed a deal in April that will see him compete in the 2025 and 2026 Formula 1 seasons. His manager, Flavio Briatore, seemed to suggest that there will be no more Alonso in F1 after 2026.
Surely, someone in their mid-40s will think about moving away from Formula 1? Maybe try some other challenges in motorsport before it's too late? Maybe spend some important time with his family? Or simply relax? Especially when he's spent most of their life since 2001 in F1. Not Alonso. Here's why Briatore could be wrong, and Alonso simply signs yet another deal to remain a Formula 1 driver beyond 2026.
Newey to Aston Martin
Newey was linked to various teams in the Formula 1 paddock, but he will be working with Aston Martin ready for when the 2026 regulations hit the sport. Alonso has previously shown interest in working with Newey. The two-time World Champion weighed up working with him in the paddock at the Miami Grand Prix weekend and labelled him as the best ever.
Nothing will inspire him more than working with Newey's drawing board. It's something he has never done before, something fresh, and something he will enjoy just as a pure racer. That would surely take some walking away from, especially if success continues to follow Newey.
Honda engine in the back of the Aston Martin
It still seems strange and will take some getting used to in 2026. The relationship between Honda and Alonso seemed irreparable after the debacle at McLaren. The radio messages spoke volumes. But times have moved on, and Honda has since won the World Championship multiple times with Red Bull. That relationship will end, and Honda will move to Aston Martin for the 2026 project.
It's a lottery. Nobody really knows who will get the advantage in the engine department when the new regulations are introduced in 2026. If Honda pulls it off and takes the lead, it will only motivate Alonso to stay and get better.
Lance Stroll
Lance Stroll doesn't seem likely to be leaving Aston Martin anytime soon. He has done well over recent weeks and he spoke to GPblog about being more comfortable in his skin. But Alonso knows that he can beat Stroll. He will be the very clear number one in the team if race wins become a realistic chance. This is a stark contrast to that experience alongside Lewis Hamilton at McLaren. It's the perfect, comfortable situation for Alonso.
Sport is all about ifs, buts and maybes. IF Aston Martin is quick in 2026, then MAYBE Alonso will find it very difficult to walk away. BUT that will take a lot of work from the Silverstone-based team. There is an extra glimmer of hope with Newey in their factory.
