Formula One could be set to make further changes to the current grid penalty system. In a fan survey carried out by F1 Fan Voice, it was noted that fans were dissatisfied with the current systems in place and asked for other options to replace the existing rules.

The research concluded the existing system was turning fans off of the sport. Current penalties have been criticised as being overly complicated and can ruin a race due to fast drivers being hit with penalties for reasons out of their control.

"Research conducted by Formula 1 shows that fans are not satisfied with the existing grid penalties system", as well as adding they were looking to "understand your view on some alternative options.

"Any alternative should be… simple to understand; a temporary setback for the driver; not encourage drivers to avoid running in qualifying; not financially related".

Other punishments that were touted included limiting a driver's tyre allocation or a reduction in track time during free practice making it much more difficult to find a race set-up.

Also suggested was the limiting of electrical energy used on a qualifying lap, restriction of fuel flow, weight ballast and restricting the use of DRS on a qualifying run.

It was also added that any penalty served late in the weekend that looked to limit practice time would then carry over to the next race weekend instead of being written off.
