Lewis Hamilton has been nominated for BBC Sports Personality of the year following his fifth World Championship crown.

Hamilton joined five other British sports stars on the shortlist including Harry Kane and Geraint Thomas.

“Hopefully the eight-year-old me is saying he’s proud.” Said Hamilton at the ceremony in Birmingham.

"It's been a long, long journey. I started when I was eight or nine.

"It was a dream for us all as a family, to come out and to do something different and do it as a team."

The Brit is now two world titles off equalling Michael Schumacher’s record of seven but Hamilton admitted he’s not too focused on that.

"Honestly it's not my target. My aim is to improve, to get better and to grow as a man and as a competitor.

"So many of the sports men and women in here tonight will know, the competitiveness never leaves you,” Added Hamilton.

"The great thing about this sport is I get to work with almost 2000 people in my team, so to rally these guys up and work with them throughout the year, it's an incredible journey."
