Monza set to make changes to circuit layout?

The Autodromo Nazionale Monza is set to undergo renovations ahead of its centenary in 2022. To mark the occasion, the circuit will receive €100million to redevelop the venue including changes to the track layout.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, changes to the circuit include the removal of one of the first two chicanes with the second the most likely to make way. The aims of organisers are to remove at least one chicane and reintroduce the second corner of the Lesmo to reinforce its reputation as the 'Temple of Speed'.

Additional grandstands are also in the plans to mark 100 years since being built, the hopes are also high that a new deal with Liberty Media will be reached as part of the investment into the track.

"The money will be found in some way", Angelo Sticchi Damiani said. The president of ACI and majority shareholder of the company that organises and runs the races added he was confident that a deal could be reached which would see the historic racing venue renovated in time for the 2022 target.

Further items on the to-do-list include improving ease of access to the circuit including ring roads on the outside of the track as well as widening the track width to 12m.

"This is a work that we can already do in 2019," he added. "We want to recover the ring in order to expand our offer. The road and the high-speed ring are a 10 km track, how many others can boast something similar? We can also think of a temporary structure that can be installed before the GP."

Government backing is still required however, something that Sticchi Damiani admitted could serve as an insurmountable roadblock in his scheme.

"The positions are still very far away from the areas we would like to manage and we have not yet talked about figures."
