George Russell has insisted he is aiming to get his new Williams team "back to where they belong" - meaning the top of the grid.

Russell was announced as the man to replace a departing Lance Stroll for Williams, with the Canadian driver off to join his father at Force India.

He spent last season winning the F2 world title, being contracted down to Mercedes.

"My main goal of course, is to get Williams to move up the grid, back to where they belong, because Robert Kubica and I are not interested in competing with each other for the nineteenth and twentieth position," Russel insisted to Sky Sports News.

Russell, referring to his new team-mate Kubica, who has had experience in F1 before, but the Pole suffered a serious hand injury after a rally car crash back in 2011.

"We want to focus with the whole team that we work together to get the team forward, then the results will come naturally and we can start thinking about each other.

"In the winter, I'm going to spend time with the team, I worked in the Formula 2 with a group of 30 people, while I'm going to work with a group of 750 people at Williams, so I can go through all the different departments and try to make everyone to get to know me well, so that I can establish myself in the team."
