Brawn reveals frustrations with lack of midfield podiums

28-11-2018 11:14

Ross Brawn says it is "unacceptable" how midfield teams have achieved just two podiums over the last two seasons. Brawn vowes to tackle the problem as quickly because the "future of Formula 1 depends on it."

Sergio Perez picked up this season's only podium from a midfield team in Azerbaijan while Lance Stroll achieved the same feat, in the same race last season. Also highlighted was the 297-point gap between Red Bull and 'best of the rest' Renault.

"As was the case in 2017, only once and significantly, on a very unusual street circuit like Baku, did a driver from one of those seven teams make it to the podium," Brawn told Autosport.

"Two podiums from a total of 123 is unacceptable, especially when it comes with an ever increasingly technical and financial divide."

To make matters worse, three of the top six drivers failed to complete the race after retirement in Azerbaijan this season. With the 2021 regulation changes, Formula 1 looks set to install a budget cap which Brawn hopes will cut the gap down quickly.

"It's a problem we are tackling together with the FIA and the teams because the future of Formula 1 depends on it. There are various solutions on the table, and we must all accept that we can't go on like this for too much longer," Brawn added.
