Short-list of 55 drivers made for inaugural W-series

The new racing series featuring all-female drivers has unveiled a list of 55 potential drivers. The W-series has space for 18 seats when the action gets underway in May 2019.

The championship will see six rounds, with races lasting 30-minutes on tracks around Europe. They'll be driving Tatuus F3-spec cars and desperate for a share of the $1.5m prize fund.

Funds for travel and subsistence costs will get covered by the W-series. This is hoped to give the drivers a real good chance of attaining a move further up the motorsport ladder.

The list includes five Brits and has been compiled from more than 100 applicants from 30 countries around the world.

"We are thrilled but perhaps not surprised by the response,” series CEO Catherine Bond Muir said in an interview on F1i. 

“Even today there is a massive gender imbalance in motorsport and W Series is making the first step to correct that. Drivers from all over the world have stepped forward, so it's clear that with the right framework we can make the changes this sport desperately needs.”
