Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has expressed his criticism about the media and the way it takes Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton's words out of context, as the Brit got in hot water recently over a quote he gave about India.

Hamilton's comments about India stirred up some controversy, as the now five-time world champion called India a "poor country" when talking about adding more races to the F1 calendar.

Three Grands Prix were held in India this decade between 2011 and 2013 at the Buddh International Circuit before it disappeared again, with tax issues causing the government to pull the plug in terms of financial support. Hamilton did participate in all three India Grands Prix.

Hamilton took to his Instagram to explain his comments, which were seen as offensive and derogatory.

Mercedes also issued a statement on social media, with Wolff firing back at the media for always taking Hamilton's quotes out of context to shine a bad light on him.

“It is once again unbelievable to me how the words and the meaning of Lewis get spun out of context in this way," his statement read.

"He spoke with empathy about India and the painful contrast between wealth and poverty that we face while travelling the globe as sporting ambassadors.

”Lewis did not criticise the nation and his words were those of a thoughtful and considered champion. The only fault here lies with the people who have twisted his words to mean something else entirely.”
