Ferrari set to sign Wehrlein?

08-11-2018 14:12

Pascal Wehrlein recently announced he would be splitting from Mercedes after a long time as a Mercedes junior, believing that his career would fare better without the Mercedes backing, and now he could be in line for a shock role with Ferrari.

Ferrari are without a test and simulator driver since Daniil Kvyat and Antonio Giovinazzi have secured full time F1 race seats with Toro Rosso and Sauber respectively and the Italian team could turn to former Sauber and Manor driver Wehrlein to take up the role.

Since being dropped by Sauber at the end of 2017 despite scoring their only points of the season, the 24 year-old returned to DTM, a title he won back in 2015, but has not fared so well, finishing the season in eighth place.

Wehrlein has never hidden his ambition to return to F1 and a backseat role at Ferrari could be the ideal way to make his comeback to the sport in 2020.

He will drive in Formula E next year, which will leave him free to attend most race weekends and according to Motorsport, Ferrari are keen to offer him a deal due to his inside knowledge of Mercedes, which they hope will provide them with an edge over the Silver Arrows next season.
