A spokesperson for Formula E has insisted they are still hopeful about the possibility of recruiting Fernando Alonso for the 2019/20 season.

The spokesperson has revealed that informal talks have been held with the McLaren F1 driver over joining.

Alonso's team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne has already been announced to be driving in Formula E next season.

The two-time world champion, Alonso, has drove 17 seasons in Formula One and is leaving the sport at the end of the season to pursue more motorsport options.

IndyCar has been speculated to be an option for the veteran driver, but it seems as if Formula E is also a very viable option for the Spaniard.

"We've been speaking to Fernando on a friendly and informal basis for a while and he's always been very clear with us," a Formula E spokesperson told e-racing365.

"Hopefully, he will take a closer look at our championship and appreciate how much drivers can make a difference in our races and then evaluate his interest on whether to join the pack.

"It will then be up to teams to go after such a great talent, but he'll always be welcome in our championship."

Alonso has previosuly said that Formula E "is not in his plans".

"All the categories are interesting," Alonso explained to AS. "I watch them all on television, I'm passionate about racing. But right now it is not within my plans."
