Lewis Hamilton went ahead of Alain Prost’s mark of four world championships in Mexico last weekend as he secured his fifth world title with two races to spare, putting him joint second with Juan Manuel Fangio on the list of most titles won.

Hamilton secured his status as an all time great, if he wasn’t already and Prost has now said that he believes Hamilton is the best of his generation.

The Frenchman said: “Now you can only say that Lewis is one of the best, if not the best of his generation.

“Sebastian also had a good season, but not good enough to beat the combination of Lewis and Mercedes.”

Prost has also been recently displaced from second in the all time list of race wins by Hamilton and Vettel, but he did criticise Vettel’s decision making and timing of his mistakes.

He added: “He made mistakes at the wrong time, as in Baku or Hockenheim, otherwise he would have been 30 points ahead at the time and with less pressure.”

In Baku, Vettel went for a late lunge on leader Valtteri Bottas, only to overshoot turn one and eventually finish fourth, whereas in Hockenheim, he crashed tamely out of the lead of a race he was dominating.

He has also been involved in plenty of first lap incidents which have not aided his challenge.

Prost went on to say that Hamilton has been unbeatable this season. He said: “Lewis was just psychologically very strong against Seb this year. He was very mature, under the circumstances it was impossible to beat him.”
