Ricciardo eyeing 2021 Renault title

This could be one of the biggest stories to watch out for in F1 over the next few years; how Daniel Ricciardo fares at Renault. The Australian made the brave call to join the French team in the summer break, ending his long and often fruitful partnership with Red Bull.

His two wins aside, Ricciardo has had a torrid season in 2018, not managing to score another podium, whereas team mate Max Verstappen has secured several.

Ricciardo will be sticking with the Renault engines that have plagued him with unreliability and un-competitiveness in the last few years, while Red Bull switch to Honda, with plenty of people suggesting that Renault could even be ahead of Ricciardo’s current team next year, due to the difference in engine power.

It is unlikely that Renault will be able to win the title or even races next year, but Ricciardo is targeting a championship push within three years.

He said: “Starting this next journey, realistically I would say 2021, I want to be world champion that year."

As for this year, Ricciardo is just looking for positive results.

"As a team to get their best result possible. I don't know now what their best is for the last few years, but if it's sixth, I want to finish fifth, for example.

"I also want to prove to myself and to other people that it was the right decision, I guess to prove some people wrong.

"And just grow with the team and to feel the progress, to be part of that, and to feel like their investment in me was worthwhile."
