Grosjean was "never worried" about losing his Haas seat

There was a lot of chat over the summer about Romain Grosjean being let go and replaced by Haas F1 at the end of the 2018 season after a torrid start to his campaign this year.

Grosjean failed to score in the first eight races of the F1 season, whilst team mate Kevin Magnussen racked up four top 10 finishes, fuelling rumours regarding the Frenchman’s future.

Adding to the poor form, unnecessary crashes at the Azerbaijan and Spanish Grands Prix made some people think he was returning to his early 2012 form, which saw plenty of first lap accidents and even a race ban after the pile-up at La Source in the Belgian Grand Prix.

However, Grosjean’s form has turned around recently. He has scored 31 points in the last nine races, more than Magnussen in that period.

It may have been this form that convinced the Haas team to keep him on for 2019, as it was announced before the Russian Grand Prix that the American team would be sticking with its current driver line up for a third consecutive season.

And now Grosjean has revealed that he was never worried that he would lose his seat: “I don’t want this to sound wrong but I was never worried that I wouldn’t be here next year.

“At one point after Silverstone I knew it couldn’t keep going that way but I knew I had the solution somewhere and I knew I could bounce back.

“I thought Germany was the point, I was good and then I knew the team would see it and we would work it through.

“If I kept going as early on and it wouldn’t have worked but from the point I knew exactly what I needed to do then I was convinced things would go in a positive way.”
