Sauber driver Marcus Ericsson believes that points would have been possible on Sunday if the Swede had have qualified better for the Japanese Grand Prix.

Ericsson started at the bottom of the grid on Sunday after crashing out of Q1 - meaning he had to start in 20th, but bravely, the driver fought his way back up to 12th on the grid.

"We knew that it would be a difficult race, but taking our starting position (20th) into consideration, finishing in 12th is a result we can be satisfied with," Ericsson revealed to The Checkered Flag.

"We had a good pace and the car also felt quite good. I drove on the same set of tyres for the majority of the race, which required a lot of management from my side."

Ericsson was pleased with his battling and overall performance, but the Sauber man was left to wonder what could have been if he hadn't have crashed out in qualifying.

"It's a bit of a shame not to have started the race from a better position, because points could have been possible," Ericsson continued. "Nevertheless, it was a positive day, and I look forward to our next chance in Austin."

Sauber are currently battling with Toro Rosso for eighth place in the constructors' championship - with the Red Bull junior team three points ahead.

On a personal note, Ericsson is level on points with Lance Stroll in 17th - both on six points.
