Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has hailed the team's weekend as perfect, as the Silver Arrows started and finished the Japanese Grand Prix in first and second, with Lewis Hamilton starting from pole position and driving to a comfortable win.

Hamilton's position was never really in jeopardy, but his teammate Valtteri Bottas was on the verge of being overtaken by the charging Max Verstappen in P3. The Dutchman was on softer tyres and took care of them very well, eventually being only half a second behind Bottas. However, the Finn hung on and finished second, compiling the misery even more for Ferrari in the constructors' championship.

“We started off where we left off in Sochi and the drivers just feel good with the car and I think that as a driver, if you have that confidence and you are able to pushing it had within the limits and you feel it then it’s enjoyable to drive and this is what we have achieved I think',' Wolff analyzed when speaking to Autoweek.

“We knew that we had a good race at Monza, high-speed track, and we had a good one in Singapore, twisty and hot.

"And we thought if we could we can really prove it in Suzuka then we have done all kinds of circuits with all kinds of corners and it was a real test for us.

"This is what we discussed last week in the engineering group and we came here and delivered.”

Mercedes now have a whopping 78-point advantage over Ferrari in the constructors' championship as Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel only managed to finish fifth and sixth respectively. With only four races to go now, it looks to be over, but Mercedes will definitely not lift their foot off the gas.

Next up on the calendar is the United States in two weeks' time, a circuit which has been one of Hamilton's favourites in recent years.
