Former Sauber driver Pascal Wehrlein could be making his comeback in Formula One next season with Toro Rosso, which is something that would "overwhelm" Mercedes boss Toto Wolff.

Wehrlein's F1 career looked promising at Sauber, with the German Mercedes driver looking very impressive at times for the Swiss team, but he was eventually axed at the end of the 2017 season to make place for rookie Charles Leclerc.

The German returned to DTM while still remaining part of the Mercedes junior programme, until it was announced recently that he will cut ties with the Silver Arrows at the end of the year.

This could immediately open some doors for him, as Toro Rosso are reportedly in for him to put next to the reportedly signed Daniil Kvyat. Wolff would be very happy for Wehrlein if this would happen.

“Obviously we felt also together with Pascal that this [contract release] was the best outcome for him,” Wolff told PlanetF1.

“My opinion of him is still very high and it looked like that we could be possibly blocking his future career.

“This is not what we wanted, and he also felt that he needed to do it on his own and give it a go on his own.

“I would be overwhelmed and happy if he on his own would find his way into Formula 1 or a professional racing career.”

Wehrlein will have a lot of competition for that seat, as now runner-up in Formula 3 Daniel Ticktum also remains in contention. Ticktum made some spicy comments towards Mick Schumacher earlier today, and it's not clear whether this will affect his future at all.
