Fernando Alonso says that the new F1 2021 concept designs for the cars look very promising. The Spaniard may be leaving F1 at the end of the 2018 season but he praised the designs and added he hoped that they would help alleviate the difficulties the drivers have overtaking currently due to dirty air.

Alonso won't be reassessing his F1 future just yet and shock everyone by announcing he will stay until 2021, but he did comment that a future return could happen so maybe we will see Alonso in one of these new cars.

Speaking to media about the car designs, Alonso said he was impressed with how the cars looked, adding that they appeared to be futuristic and had a positive look for F1.

“If they did a study, they checked and they know it’s going to be better in the future, it’s the way to go,” he said.

“The cars aesthetically look different. More like a Formula Renault or an IndyCar and they seem to follow each other a little bit closer. It’s good to copy ideas that work already.

“It has been a little bit the nature of Formula 1, it’s always been difficult to follow cars. I don’t think it’s been more difficult than 2004 or 2005 and those kind of years.

“It was probably a bit easier from 2010 to 2016 – when we introduced last year the wide wings and the wide tyres it makes it a little bit more difficult now.”
