Arrivabene taking keen interest on Mick Schumacher's career

Could Ferrari be eyeing up Mick Schumacher to replace Sebastian Vettel in a few years time? Maurizio Arrivabene confirms Ferrari are watching how the young driver continues to develop in the F3 championship. Mick, son of Michael Schumacher, trails the leader of the championship by just three points.

An F3 championship win would look brilliant on his CV. With just two races left, he has a good chance of beating Dan Ticktum to the title. If he moves into F2, the 19-year-old could well join the Ferrari driver academy.

"The recent results were very, very good and I wish to him a great career," the Ferrari Team Principal Maurizio Arrivabene told the F1 website.

"But let the guy have fun. I always repeat this [young drivers should be] focused, concentrated, but at the same time have fun and grow up slowly but certainly. Then we will see about his future. How can you say no, in Maranello, to a name like this?"

Schumacher has been thriving over recent weekends. His display at the Nurburgring was dominant as he won all three races. The likelihood is if Schumacher is to join the Ferrari academy, he'll follow a similar pathway to Charles Leclerc.

The Sauber Team Principal Fred Vasseur was also quizzed on the scenario.

"Honestly, I think there is a huge step between F3 and F1 and with the small number of test days we have during the winter, I think it’s… I don’t want to say impossible because we will see, but it’s quite difficult to do the step," he said.

“It will make sense probably for him to do Formula 2 or something like this. But he could have a link with a Formula 1 team, he could do some FP1s. There are many ways to prepare for F1.”
