Fernando Alonso is positive about the changes that are being made in Formula One in 2021 after the concepts of the new cars were released yesterday, saying that the sport is copying classes like Formula Renault and IndyCar (in a good way).

The Spaniard announced his retirement from F1 earlier this summer, with the 37-year-old making the switch to IndyCar. He's been very critical about the current state of F1, saying it's been too predictable and not fun to drive in anymore. That's why he was pleasantly surprised when the sport released pictures of new concept cars for 2021, as Liberty Media is trying to steer F1 into a new direction.

"These are positive changes," he told El Mundo Deportivo.

"They look like Formula Renault and IndyCar cars.

"They've copied ideas of which they know that they work and which are better," he explained.

When it comes to the race at hand in Singapore, Alonso is content with the pace McLaren are showing. The two-time champion finished as high as eighth in FP1, but he immediately cautioned that this time probably isn't representative of what qualifying will be like.

"You have to keep in mind that Vettel couldn't finish his lap and that Hülkenberg is quick and he hasn't done a fast lap, so that puts me tenth already.

"We'll be there, fighting to get into Q3, we'll have a good fight."
