The joy and perhaps relief at Mercedes was great after the Spanish Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell finished second and third, proving that the updates to the W14 are a huge step in the right direction. Damon Hill even dared to say that the German racing stable is now definitely (for how long it lasts) the second force in Formula 1.

The former Formula 1 driver stated in the Sky Sports podcast that Aston Martin and Ferrari have been passed. The Circuit de Catalunya is a track where tyre management and good aero balance are crucial. "All the circuits are different but Barcelona is one of those places that shows up pure performance, aero package and balance etc, which is why the Red Bulls were so dominant, or at least Max (Verstappen) was."

The result in Spain is "encouraging" for Mercedes, the analyst believes. "Maybe this has unlocked more potential. But whether it's able to unlock more potential to beat Red Bull is questionable because I think they are stuck with the fundamental chassis they have underneath [the car]," he said.

Mercedes wants to compete again in 2024

This season's world title already seems out of sight given Red Bull Racing's huge lead in the Constructors' Championship. Hill therefore thinks Mercedes has already set its sights on 2024. That does not mean there will be no more updates this season, as any progress made in 2023 will carry over to next year. After all, the regulations remain the same.

Hill: "To overhaul Red Bull before the end of the season is going to be very difficult. I think if they manage to firmly establish themselves as 'the threat' going into 2024 by the end of the season then they will consider that a victory."
