Verstappen on RB19 potential: 'Yes, but we didn't need it'

Max Verstappen made it a Grand Slam in Spain, as the Red Bull Racing driver won the race without relinquishing the lead for a moment and also took the fastest lap. Verstappen did not even drive on the limit, with the Dutchman not worrying about an advancing Mercedes and about teammate Sergio Perez.

Verstappen had 'pace over'

That is what Verstappen said in the press conference that followed his strong race in Barcelona. Asked if there was more pace left in his RB19, Verstappen said: "I guess so. If you had to try and catch up, let's say, probably yes. But it's not necessary. It's all about managing your tyres and trying to reach the stint length."

Next to him on the podium were Lewis Hamilton and George Russell who ensured that Mercedes passed Aston Martin in the constructors' championship, taking second place as a result. Mercedes are usually fast at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and put some radical upgrades on the W14 in Monaco, but people looked up to the team's speed this weekend.

Verstappen does not address duel with Perez

Verstappen already said not to worry about it. For now, his only challenger for the title is still his team-mate Sergio Perez, although the Mexican has lost a lot of ground in the World Championship after he failed to finish on the podium again. Asked if Verstappen is happy with his extended lead, the Dutchman gives no immediate answer: "I mean, we had another strong weekend, and that’s what I like to see for myself from the team. And hopefully, you know, we can just keep that up throughout the year."
