De Vries again returns home scoreless: 'Missed opportunity'

Nyck de Vries finished the Spanish Grand Prix in the same place where he started: 14th place. The AlphaTauri driver was aiming for points at the familiar Barcelona circuit, but a poor start prevented an actual finish in the top-ten.

For De Vries, did it feel like he missed an opportunity for his first points on Sunday? "I mean, every weekend is an opportunity, so if we didn't score points then of course it's a missed opportunity. But I guess today it was mainly down to the first lap when you lose three or four positions in that row. I was behind Pierre [Gasly], and we came out behind each other out of lap one, so it was clear that that kind of row got stuck."

The pace of the AT04 was good enough at times to compete for points, according to the 28-year-old Dutchman. "Like the beginning wasn't great, but I also felt it was perhaps partly related to where I was on track fighting with those cars. So, you know, it is the way it is," he said to GPblog and others. Teammate Yuki Tsunoda crossed the line in ninth place, however, he ran into a five-second time penalty.

De Vries himself is moderately satisfied. The pace was there, but the reward was lacking. "I would say so, yeah," he responded as if he had shown his best speed of the season in Barcelona. "I think from the get-go we were competitive [from the beginning of the weekend]. I'm very pleased and thankful to the job the team has done because it seems like we're getting closer and closer towards the top ten. So, yeah, I hope to continue like this."
