Wolff: "The track should favour the Ferraris"

Toto Wolff has braced himself for a "tricky" weekend in Singapore. He admitted the track will favour their title rivals, Ferrari. Mercedes avoided a fight with the Italian team at the Marina Bay last season due to the Ferrari first corner team-mate collision.

The gap between Hamilton and Vettel has opened up to 30 points in the Brits favour. Despite riding the highs over the past week, Wolff knows his German team must prepare for a tougher challenge this weekend.

"The result in Italy was a great reward for everyone in the team who has been working tirelessly to improve our performance," team principal Wolff told Sky Sports F1.

"Singapore, on the other hand, has features that we've struggled with in the past. The short straights, the slow, tight corners and the bumpy surface all make the Marina Bay Street Circuit one of the trickiest tracks of the season for us."

Sebastian Vettel has won four races on this street circuit, more than any other driver. Hamilton has won three times in 2009, 2014 and 2017. Wolff looks back at previous experiences to edge on the side of caution.

"In 2015, we endured one of our most painful experiences in recent years there. Last year, we started the race from the third row - and came home with a win and a third place," added Wolff.

"On paper, the track should favour the Ferraris, but the Championship fight is so close that predictions are almost meaningless."

All we know is, one Mercedes mistake will bring Ferrari right back in it. It's a huge weekend.
