Carlos Sainz had the best race of his F1 career at Singapore last season as the Spaniard finished fourth, but he eyes to equal or even improve on that result this year, he has revealed.

Sainz will be replacing his fellow countryman Fernando Alonso at McLaren next season, as the latter will retire from F1 and take his talents to IndyCar. As McLaren is likely a step down from Renault if this season's results are anything to go on, Singapore could be one of the last chances for Sainz to get a shock result.

"Last year, the Singapore GP was maybe the best race of my Formula 1 career," Sainz told Marca.

"Everything went smoothly and I finished fourth - I won't forget that race anytime soon.

"Having said that, I want to improve on that result every time I get in the car.

"It's a tough place to do so here [Singapore], as racing at night is a big challenge.

"But as it's my 75th race and Nico [Hülkenberg]'s 150th, I hope we can celebrate that in style.

"At least the same result as last year, but preferably better."

Better than last season would mean a podium-place for Sainz, which would be the first of his career. With the gap between the top three teams and the rest of the field, which Renault does currently lead, it will be tough to crack the top three for the Spaniard. But you never know, you're never far removed from the Red Bulls breaking down and Vettel making a mistake. Could this be the year for Sainz?
