Small jibe from Alonso to Hamilton: 'Winning and losing together, right?'

Fernando Alonso hopes to make things difficult for the Red Bulls in Monaco. How realistic that is, he does not yet know, but the 41-year-old Spaniard will give everything to give Aston Martin victory. Alonso also left his thoughts on the Hamilton contract situation: should the Briton stay with Mercedes or make the lucrative move to Ferrari?

"You never know," Alonso responded in the press conference. "I think they are better than everyone else. They did a better job and they are dominating the season, and they deserve it. For us, it's just a gift what we are achieving at the moment. We didn't expect to be in this position, so we are enjoying every weekend. There are a couple of weekends like this one that I come here thinking that I will try to win."

The AMR23 impresses in the slow corners in 2023 and there are quite a few of those in Monaco. Alonso is therefore going for the win and hopes for even more later in the season. "We saw a gearbox failure for Max [Verstappen] in Saudi in Q2. We had problems in Checo's car in Australia, all the free practice and qualifying. If one of those things happens on a Sunday, automatically you close the gap massively and start to be more interesting. The championship is long. We will not give up."

Alonso on future Hamilton

Alonso was also briefly asked about advice for Hamilton amidst the current talk about his expiring contract with Mercedes. The seven-time world champion has been linked with a move to Ferrari, with the British driver perhaps not too satisfied with Mercedes' last couple of seasons. Although Hamilton himself has already indicated that he is close to a contract extension, Alonso could not resist delivering a little jibe towards his former teammate: "I have no idea, but he always said he win and lose together with the team. If he is not winning, he should stay," Alonso chuckled.
