Fernando Alonso had every confidence in his switch from Alpine to Aston Martin, but he too could not have predicted that the results would come so soon. While this makes the 41-year-old Spaniard dream of a third world title, he also has an important life goal outside Formula 1.

Alonso surprised by Aston Martin performance

Alonso, who has scored 15 points in every Grand Prix weekend so far in the 2023 F1 season, was surprised by the great strides made by his new team over the winter period. "I trusted the project and felt it was a nice adventure for me at the end of my career, to start with a team that has so much enthusiasm and good prospects," he said in an interview with The New York Times.

"But I thought it would take time to reach a certain level, that maybe in 2024 we can fight for podiums. I was not expecting the car would deliver the kind of performance we have now," he continued.

Team owner Lawrence Stroll adds that Alonso could not have known the car would be so strong at the time he signed. "When we signed that agreement last year in early August, Fernando didn’t know the car was going to be as quick as this," says Stroll. "But he did know about all the passion I’ve put in, the great people I’ve hired, the great facilities I was building, and he wanted to be a part of it. He believed."

Alonso knows he cannot go on forever

While Alonso has a multi-year contract at Aston Martin and appears to be only at the beginning of his comeback, the 41-year-old Spaniard realises he cannot go on forever. "I am aware of my age. I know I will not be here for the next 10 years, or whatever, so maybe when I stop racing, I will be linked to the team somehow," he says.

Aston Martin's strong performance has given Alonso hope that that long-awaited 33rd win, and maybe even more, is possible. "Winning a championship would be a perfect thing. If I win another championship all these years since my previous one, that would be unprecedented, that kind of distance between two championships. That is my goal at the moment," the Spaniard continued.

Alonso dreams of a family

Apart from victories and that coveted third world title, however, Alonso also holds other ambitions. "I want to have a family. This is my biggest dream in life. I’ve still not succeeded in that because of my way of living. That’s something that when I stop racing, where I will find my happiness," said the two-time world champion.
