McLaren junior and 2019 driver Lando Norris says he is hopeful of emulating the last young Brit to come through the ranks with McLaren in Lewis Hamilton. The 18-year-old was confirmed as replacing Stoffel Vandoorne at the team next season and hopes he can have a career in F1 similar to that of Hamilton.

Having risen through the ranks with McLaren's backing just like Hamilton, Norris is hopeful that he can achieve similar amounts of success that Hamilton has achieved throughout his career.

“I think it’s nice to be compared to such a good driver," Norris said. "I have admired Lewis since I started watching Formula One because I know how a good a driver he is and I know how hard it is."

“And for him to have done as well as he has done is pretty impressive.

“Hopefully one day I can have as many championship wins as he has.

“But I think more of my focus is on next year rather than thinking what could happen.”

Norris is currently competing in F2 against Mercedes junior driver George Russell for the championship and currently sits 22 points behind the championship leader. Should he win the championship then he will be on the right path to emulating Hamilton's success.

Carlos Sainz will line up alongside Norris at McLaren next season, an experienced Spaniard joining a British rookie at McLaren, the same situation as back in 2007 when Hamilton burst onto the F1 scene alongside Fernando Alonso at the famous team.

Hopefully for McLaren, they will be able to challenge for wins just as they did back then.
