Pat Fry is set to make a return to McLaren as engineering chief, as they continue to update their technical department.

In McLaren's bid to get back to where they once were, they are trying everything they possibly can - including behind the scenes.

McLaren are still eager to bring James Key in from Toro Rosso sooner than what they initially agreed, but are yet to have clarification from Toro Rosso about the technical director's release.

However, Motorsport.com reports that Fry is set to join McLaren immediately for the rest of this season.

Fry spent 17 years at McLaren between 1993 and 2010 but then he switched alliances to Ferrari - before he was made vacant following some reorganisation to their structure.

The 54-year-old then spent a brief period of time with Manor, before the team were no longer at the start of last year.

McLaren have already made a host of changes to their managerial team this season - following some difficult times on and off the track for the Woking-based team.

Eric Boullier, former racing director, parted company with them, as well as tech boss Tim Goss and engineering chief Matt Morris.

Not only backroom staff have been changed by McLaren but also their drivers - with Fernando Alonso retiring at the end of the season and being replaced by Carlos Sainz and Stoffel Vandoorne's recent departure - with junior driver Lando Norris taking his seat.
