Russian driver Artem Markelov has emerged as a surprise candidate for a potential Williams race seat that may see him promoted from F2 before the end of the season. Talks that Lance Stroll could join Racing Point Force India at Monza have been rampant which would, of course, leave a seat at Williams open.

Williams' driver situation seems to be evolving by the day, rumours that Robert Kubica could make a dramatic return to Formula One with the team would be the story most fans would want to come true, however the experienced Formula 2 driver in Markelov could be the one who gets the call to replace Stroll should he move.

According to Motorsport.com, talks between Williams and Markelov have taken place with the Russian bringing significant funding with him should he gain the race seat.

"I think you will find out about this closer to the end of the year, because we are not yet 100% sure. But I hope we get the opportunity to pilot the Formula 1 car next year," Markelov said of a potential drive in F1.

"I hope they will pay attention to me and give me an opportunity. We will see".

The Russian Time driver added that no matter what happens, his fifth season in the series would be his last with or without a promotion to F1.

"No, this was more than enough.

"Maybe I'll finish (races). Who knows, but why not? So either I will finish, or Formula 1".

Markelov would hold enough super license points that would make him eligible for an F1 race seat and is currently a reserve driver for Renault but that situation may be irrelevant should Williams come calling.
