Kimi Raikkonen believes that it was pointless continuing on during the Belgian Grand Prix after getting caught up in the first corner chaos. The Finn sustained damage to the rear of his car after contact with Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo at La Source on lap one at Spa-Francorchamps.

Speaking to the media after returning to the garage to retire the car, Raikkonen admitted he didn't realise what had happened at the start but that the damage was severe enough to park the car.

“I don’t know what happened at the start: the only thing I know is that somebody hit me from behind and straight after that I got a puncture,” he said.

“I had a lot of damage to the rear wing endplate and the floor; at that point, I could not go fast and the DRS stayed open all the times, it was hard to remain on track.

“It was pointless to continue, the damage was too big, so we decided to go back to the garage.”

Having looked strong all weekend, qualifying turned sour quickly after Ferrari were caught out by the rain and hadn't fuelled Raikkonen's car enough to get a final run in leaving him only seventh for race day.

His luck didn't change much either during the race either. A disappointing weekend for Raikkonen with a strong result on the cards from Friday's running. He will be hoping that Ferrari can turn it around at Monza for him on the team's home soil.
