Alonso expecting challenging weekend at Spa

Alonso expecting "challenging weekend" at Spa

It will be a sad time for the Belgian F1 fans on Sunday as they see Fernando Alonso drive in the Belgian Grand Prix for the final time. To add to the disappointment, Alonso is expecting a tough race at a circuit where he has never tasted victory in Formula One.

Alonso comes into this race fresh from an interesting weekend at Silverstone, where he finished first on track at the 6-hour endurance race, but was later disqualified as his car, shared with former F1 drivers Sebastian Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima, failed the skid block deflection tests.

However, Alonso’s team still leads the championship, something that sadly cannot be said for his F1 adventures.

McLaren are languishing down in 7th place in the Constructors’ Championshp, 30 points behind fourth placed Renault, who McLaren were challenging closely earlier in the season for the unofficial title as ‘best of the rest’ in F1.

And that doesn’t look like changing as Alonso predicts a difficult weekend for McLaren in Belgium.

The Spaniard said: “Spa is the longest track we race on and a lot of it is at full throttle, so it will be a challenging weekend for us.

“But, I feel fresh, motivated and ready to attack the weekend and the second half of the season.”

Let’s hope for Alonso’s sake that McLaren can be a bit more competitive in the final half of this year and for this legend of the sport to go out on a high.
