Kubica: My role has changed

Robert Kubica must be finding his F1 career a struggle at the moment, being test driver for the worst car on the grid, and he has said that his role has been altered due to the slowness of the Williams car.

Kubica is on an incredible comeback journey to F1 after a rallying crash in 2011 looked to have ended his career at the peak of motorsport.

Kubica was in the form of his life and looked likely to earn himself a drive with Ferrari following terrific performances with Renault during the 2010 season, scoring two podium finishes, at Monaco and Belgium.

The one-time Grand Prix winner tested last summer for Renault, and later Williams, but Russian driver Sergey Sirotkin was preferred to the 33-year old Pole, Kubica having to settle in the test and reserve driver role.

Kubica feels that the pace problems Williams have been suffering from has changed his role in the team.

He told Motorsport.com: “In our situation, we are working on trying to solve things, so it’s a bit different to what my role was planned to be.

“In the situation where the car ran smoothly, I would have a big impact.

“On the other hand, I am also working on the simulator and trying to improve this area of the team. And I’m taking part in the technical meetings and stuff like this.

“It’s quite an open-minded position and that’s what I think is satisfactory for myself and for the team.”
