Fernando Alonso is now 41 years old, but the Spaniard has lost nothing in terms of speed. With Aston Martin, he is currently the revelation of the season. Proof that a successful time in Formula 1 is possible at a relatively late age. But how long can he keep it up?

Age not a factor

Alonso said this week he wanted to continue for at least ten years. Realistic? "I think the most important is the speed and the desire to compete, or the desire to be competitive," says Mike Krack, team principal of Aston Martin. "I don't like to speak about age, about Fernando's age, about my age also by the way. In general, I think it is really important how you keep yourself fit, how you keep yourself in, and what is your desire to do well, and this is something outstanding that Fernando is having."

Aston Martin his best chance

For Alonso, a big reason for continuing for so long is the dream of winning a third-world title, and Aston Martin appears to be his best chance at the moment. "I would really be happy if we could provide the car for him to gain this third title, but I think we need to keep our feet a bit more on the ground, speaking about world titles. We have now made our first step in progressing to where we were before, and we should not start to dream", Krack said.

In any case, the weekend started strongly for Alonso. The Spaniard finished the second free practice session fastest. Free practise two was completed in the rain, with many drivers unable to complete their flying laps as a result.
