Carlos Sainz and his Ferrari team realise on the eve of the Australian Grand Prix that Red Bull Racing is currently superior. Expectations are therefore not very high in the Italian camp, the Spanish driver confesses to Sky Sports.

Sainz thinks the characteristics of the track in Melbourne are fairly similar to those in Jeddah. In Saudi Arabia, Ferrari was pretty far from the front positions. So the conclusion is: "There is nothing telling me that we should suddenly out pace the Red Bulls. Maybe a bit better chance but I prefer to keep the expectations low because it's being realistic."

Earlier in Monaco

Sainz has also seen Ferrari several tenths slower than Red Bull during qualifying, eight tenths even during a race. "To change that [expectations] just because of a different circuit is difficult. It would have to be Monaco or a freaky track to change the situation but always optimistic

From the available data, Ferrari has been able to identify where the car's weaknesses are. According to Sainz, it has thus become clear in which direction the further development of the car should take place. "It will not be within a race, two or three, more midterm but at least we have a clear target in mind. The car is doing what the data suggests and the feeling is as the data suggests. That's what makes me feel optimistic. Knowing also that Ferrari have the capacity to develop and manpower to change things quickly", Sainz concluded.
