It has come out that Formula 1 has seriously discussed the possibilities of a Grand Prix in Sydney and Stefano Domenicali confirmed this in conversation with The Age. In the end, the decision was made to stay in Melbourne for the Australian Grand Prix. Domenicali is also not ruling out a night race in Melbourne.

Grand Prix in Sydney

The Australian Grand Prix has been held in Melbourne for years. Last year, it was revealed that this race will remain on the calendar until 2035. This was not at all that certain: in fact, Domenicali said in conversation that there were also serious talks to move the Grand Prix to Sydney.

"We had a very important offer from Sydney to have the grand prix, and that was dealt in a very, very professional way. At the end of the day, it was not an easy decision, but all in all, it was for the best of Formula 1."

Night race in Australia?

So far, the Australian Grand Prix has always been run under daylight, but Formula One's CEO does not rule out that it would always remain that way in the future. “We’ve discussed about it. Why not? It’s a matter of investment. It could be attractive. When you’re planning for so long, you can really think what is the best to create new products. You never know," Domenicali said.
