The Saudi Arabia Grand Prix provided a striking result. Not only because Fernando Alonso was taken off the podium and later reinstated, but also because Mercedes seems to be challenging Ferrari after all. Former F1 driver Timo Glock rates the two top teams evenly low.

It seems Mercedes has continued the sandbagging that traditionally accompanies F1 winter tests into the season. At Mercedes led by Toto Wolff, apologies are already being made for the disappointing performance. But it is actually not as bad as Wolff makes it seem. George Russell showed that with a bit of luck, podiums are possible even at this early stage. In the process, Mercedes beat rival Ferrari in Saudi Arabia.

Mercedes and Ferrari not even fighting each other for podium

Glock told German Sky: "Surprisingly, Mercedes was able to beat Ferrari. At the moment Mercedes seems to be stronger in the race. Ferrari had problems, but I would rate the teams at the same level. It now depends on who is better on certain circuits and what the conditions are. That will determine which of the two comes third behind Red Bull Racing and Aston Martin."

Glock further mentions that he disagrees with the FIA's harsh penalties, which resulted in Alonso's podium being taken away in Jeddah and then not after all. Glock: "That penalty was not justified. I think the rules need to be reviewed. F1 is simply over regulated. An action like this with Alonso only creates problems in F1."
