Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul has revealed his plans for new driver Daniel Ricciardo to challenge for the title in 2021.

Daniel Ricciardo shocked the Formula One world recently, when he announced that he'd be leaving Red Bull at the end of the season and joining Renault for the 2019 season.

Ricciardo looked as if he would definitely be staying with the Austrian team, as Ferrari and Mercedes are both keeping the same line-ups.

Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul has revealed the team's plans for the Australian to be fighting to win races in 2020 and the title in 2021.

"His commitment to us proves our will to accelerate the catching-up process to the top teams," Abiteboul told Auto Motor und Sport.

"It's also a recognitin of the work we have done over the past two and a half years.

"Daniel's talent and charisma are a big bonus for us. We have to repay that trust by providing him with the best possible car."

The Renault boss has admitted that Ricciardo's first season with Renault, next season, may be too early to start winning races.

"With Ricciardo, the big objective is to fight for the title in 2021, but we hope that we can start winning races in 2020," Abiteboul added.

"But I have also realised that these 29, 30-year-old drivers - and it's the same thing with Nico (Hulkenberg) - they not only want to drive but they aspire to something else. It's not the same with everyone, but I do believe it is with these two guys."
