Ex-Formula One driver, David Coulthard thinks that there isn't a downside to his former side, Red Bull switching to Honda power units next season.

There has been lots of confusion to why Red Bull are switching engine supplier from Renault to Honda next season.

However, ex-Red Bull driver David Coulthard believes that there is no downside for the energy drink branded team to switch to Honda next season, as they look to take the step up to the Mercedes/Ferrari level.

Red Bull have ended their 12-year relationship with Renault in a spell that has been very successful for the two parties.

The last few years have seen the Renault engine lack the power of the Ferrari and Mercedes engines and that's why the team felt it was time for something different.

"I think given where they are in terms of the relationship with Renault, the uncertainty over what happens beyond 2020, I don't see any downside for them," Coulthard told Crash.net.

"Renault have a great history in Formula 1 but whilst they try to build up their team to be a Renault-Renault world championship, are they really going to be happy to be winning in the back of a Red Bull?

"Nobody knows what the future holds but if you use all the same ingredients all the time you get the same cake. If you want a different outcome you've got to change something in the process."
