A small glimmer of hope may have arisen for some people when it emerged that Max Verstappen was unable to be present in Jeddah on Thursday due to illness. However, the Dutchman was quick to dispel all speculation, saying that it would take a bit more than that for him to miss out on a Grand Prix.

Verstappen was affected by a stomach flu virus ahead of the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix, which made him decide to postpone his flight by a day. He skipped media activities on Thursday and arrived in Jeddah later that day. The decision was fodder for all sorts of speculation about his possible replacement, should the Red Bull Racing driver himself be unable to drive.

More is needed to take out Verstappen

Asked by Viaplay if his participation in the Saudi Arabia GP was at any time in danger, a clear answer followed. "No. I would have to break both legs and both arms," Verstappen says firmly. Stomach flu is clearly not enough to knock out the two-time world champion, it appears.

A number of adjustments have been made to the Jeddah Corniche Circuit to improve track safety. As far as Verstappen could judge prior to Friday's practice, the changes are looking positive. "From what I have seen so far, it looks good," said the reigning world champion.
