In 2022, both Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez were scrutinised after the Monaco race for crossing the white line when exiting the pit lane. Ahead of the start of the 2023 F1 season, the FIA tightened the rules.

Perez and Verstappen were not penalised for the alleged offences in 2022. Perez won the race and was found not to have crossed the white line after investigation. Verstappen touched the white line but did not go completely over it with his wheel. The FIA therefore decided that based on the regulations, there was no observable infringement.

However, it has decided to make this clearer in the sporting regulations in 2023. From now on, the outside of the wheel must not go beyond the outside of the white line. This means that the entire car should not be allowed on the asphalt outside the white line. At paragraph 6.C of chapter four of Appendix L of the 2023 International Sporting Code, it is written:

"For the avoidance of doubt, crossing means that the outside of a tyre must not go beyond the outside, relative to the pit lane, of the relevant line painted on the track."
