Amid the Formula 1 test, qualifying for the Cape Town ePrix has also just been complete. Sacha Fenestraz secured pole position in a direct duel with Maximilian Günther. During qualifying, it was announced that Mahrinda and ABT Cupra will not take part in the race. Both teams felt forced to withdraw due to concerns about the safety of their own cars.

In the first semi-final, Nick Cassidy took on Fenestraz. In the other semi-final, it was Evans against Maximilian Günther. Fenestraz and Günter were faster than their opponents and in the end it was the 23-year-old Frenchman with the fastest time. Cassidy will start third, with Evans alongside him from P4. Championship leader Pascal Wehrlein will start the race from P6.

Mahindra's Formula E team and customer team ABT Cupra withdrew due to safety reasons. Mahindra discovered a rear suspension problem of such magnitude that it cannot guarantee the safety of its drivers if they do race. Lucas di Grassi, Oliver Rowland, Nico Mueller and Kelvin van der Linde (Robin Frijns' replacement) will therefore not take part in the race later on Saturday.
