Friday marked a historic moment for motorsport in India: in Hyderabad, Formula E made its debut. Sebastien Buemi came out on top after the first free practice session of the weekend.

Buemi fastest in FP1 India

After a delayed start, the cars took to the Hyderabad street circuit, but the session was soon halted. Championship leader Pascal Wehrlein made a heavy crash, caused by a stuck accelerator pedal in his Porsche. Wehrlein had to be treated for a possible foot injury and the car sustained significant damage.

The marshals proceeded efficiently and had cleared the debris within minutes, after which the session could continue. Due to Wehrlein's crash, Porsche decided to pull over all German manufacturer-powered cars until the problem got to the bottom of it, and so a few names were missing during the session: Jake Dennis, André Lotterer, and Antonio Felix Da Costa had to sit out the session.

Buemi closed the session with the fastest time, followed by Stoffel Vandoorne. Sergio Sette Camara closed in third place. Robin Frijns is still recovering from a complicated wrist fracture and was thus not in the race: his replacement, Kelvin van der Linde, closed the practice in seventeenth place.
